Different Types Of Poker Games: Essential Info

While Texas Hold’em gets all the TV time, there is not game better for action than Omaha or Omaha Hi/Low. It is quite similar to Hold’em, the difference is that the player gets 4 hole cards. The additional 2 cards almost assure that the best hand available is out there somewhere. Another interesting thing about these poker games is the availability of Hi/Low versions. As the player who has hit tries to push the chasers out, the betting gets wild.
The different games have to be played keeping different strategies in mind if you want to scoop the pot. The meaning of scooping the pot here is to cover and win both the Hi and Low hands. All of the variables and the 4 hole cards guarantee that there is a ton of money in almost every pot.

Though there is a vast array of poker games to decide from, 7 card stud is an all time favorite. It is a game which has a Low and a Hi version. 2 cards are first distributed face down and then one with its face up. After a round of betting, each participant gets another card face up. This recurs till all the participants in the hand have 4 up cards and 2 down cards. At this point, everyone will receive their last card down and the final betting round takes place.

The difference between the other varied types of Poker games like Omaha and Holdem Poker Stud is that Holdem Poker Stud is not a chaser’s game. If you cannot succeed in creating a good hand by the first round of betting and on getting the second up card, you have to give up. You will be lost otherwise. As it is necessary to keep in mind all the cards that have been dealt so far, this game requires brainpower too. You might end up making a useless effort by searching for a card which has already been folded. Be alert and keep a record of the cards on the board in your mind.

Another variation on 7 is Razz, a different type of poker game appropriate for people with bad luck. Instead of trying to get the winning hand, you are rooting for the worst hand possible. Unlike other games where having A-2-3-4-6-7-8 will have you banging your head, in Razz it is a dream hand. You require the lowest ranked hand to be a winner; otherwise the rest is the same as 7 stud. Only 5 cards play just like normal stud.

Triple Draw is one more poker game which is becoming popular. It is filled with action and amusement. This is a money making game if you have discipline. People normally play this game at lower levels just for enjoyment. This game is like another version of Razz using a 5 card draw model. You receive 5 cards and a round of betting follows. You can get rid of the cards you do not need but the end result should be a worst possible hand. 2-3-4-5-7 is great for standard Triple Draw. When the first draw is over, one more betting and discard round takes place. Showdown occurs after a third draw followed by a round of betting. You do not need any pairs, flushes or straights. You only require the worst cards to win.
